Cartwright, the UK trailer manufacturer, has been highly commended at the North West National Apprenticeship Awards 2016.

The Altrincham based company was runner up in the region for the Large Employer category.

The Awards, now in their thirteenth year, are run by the National Apprenticeship Service and recognise excellence in two areas: businesses that grow their own talent with apprentices and apprentices who have made a significant contribution to their workplaces.

On being recognised as highly commended, Cartwright's Group Managing Director Mark Cartwright said: "We are delighted that our apprenticeship programme has been recognised by the National Apprenticeship Service. When we first launched our programme in 2012 with a commitment to take on 40 apprentices year on year, it was a ground breaking initiative within the transport industry and at the time set a benchmark for others to follow.

"Skilled workers are the lifeblood of Cartwright. Indeed some of our most senior members of staff began their careers as engineering apprentices on the shop floor.

"Through the development of our apprenticeship programme we are ensuring those all-important skill sets, which have formed the foundation of the continuing success of Cartwright, are passed on to a new generation of workers.

"The programme has been a great success and it has been particularly heart-warming to see our first year's intake completing their apprenticeship and now joining the workforce as fully fledged employees. We have also had our first apprentice embarking on a degree course at Manchester Metropolitan University which is a fantastic achievement.

"Whether they be in their first year or final year, every apprentice plays an integral role within the Cartwright operation all learning skills which they will be able to take with them throughout their working life."

Cartwright was highly commended in recognition of the contribution it has made to apprenticeships following the launch of its innovative apprenticeship programme in 2012 which was designed to preserve skill sets which have been at the root of the continuing Cartwright success story.

The award was sponsored by BAE Systems.

Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service, said: "The National Apprenticeship Awards enable exceptional apprentices and dedicated employers to receive the recognition they richly deserve. Apprenticeships enable people to gain the skills and knowledge they need to succeed - in some cases up to degree level; and for businesses to grow the talent they need.

"Cartwright has been highly commended in the North West region and I would like to congratulate them on their achievement. The recognition of being highly commended is greatly deserved. There has never been a better time to become an apprentice or employ one."
