Palletways, the UK palletised freight network, has won an Operational Excellence accolade at this year's Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport awards. The award was presented to Craig Hibbert by HRH The Princess Royal and the Institute's President, Beverley Bell FCILT.

The win was in response to the firm's launch of its Vision 20:20 strategy – its largest single development undertaken by Europe's premier palletised express freight network.

Palletways' Vision 20:20 strategy, of which the Digital Information Hub is one element, beat stiff competition from across the country to win the 'Operational Excellence' award.

Beverley Bell, Institute’s President at FCILT; Princess Anne, Craig Hibbert, Group Member Development Director at Palletways and a representative from the Institute of Operations Management.

An industry first, Vision 20:20 is Palletways strategic approach to increase efficiency, add value for both members and customers and ensure the company maintains its number one market position. The Digital Information Hub, a first for the industry, provides extensive operational and customer data in real-time to improve processes, communication, traffic planning and vehicle utilisation.

Craig Hibbert, Group Member Development Director, said award judges praised the impact of the innovation in improving operational efficiency and adding value by providing 'real-time' updates to users from a single central source. He commented: "The award rightly recognises the success of our drive to provide innovative solutions that improve efficiency of our operations, our members' operations and add value for our customers. Our network is expanding strongly across Europe and we are seeing revenue and efficiency benefits throughout our operation.

"I'd like to offer a special thanks to our operations and IT teams for working so enthusiastically to work within our Vision 20:20 initiative and making it a continued success."

The success of Vision 20:20 has driven pallet volume growth from 3m to 4.3m over four years, despite the economic downturn. The development is being replicated across the 19 other countries served by the Group across Europe.

The Vision 20:20 strategy is based on four key stages which saw the team:

  • Analyse and refocus its commercial and sales activities
  • Drive innovation through technology to develop effective operational processes and systems
  • Increase brand visibility and consistency through a Europe wide communications initiative
  • Ensure that innovation and development continues to support sustainable and ambitious growth plans

The Awards were held at one of London's premier venues – the Lancaster London Hotel. CILT's Annual Awards are designed to recognise achievement and to encourage the highest standards and a professional approach to the practice of logistics and transport.
