A quarter of a century in the fleet software sector is being celebrated by Chevin Fleet Solutions this month.

The company was founded in 1990 in Belper, Derbyshire, where it still has its global head office today, and has grown from just one employee – founder and current managing director Ashley Sowerby - to more than 68 across the world today.

Milestones include the introduction of FleetWave in 2001, believed to be the first web-based fleet management software system, and the opening of offices in the US in 2002, in Australia in 2009 and in Brussels in 2011.

Today, more than 850,000 vehicles across 120 countries are managed using Chevin software, ranging from public sector, utility, construction and corporate organisation through to governments and international aid operations of every size and type

Ashley Sowerby, managing director, said: "The Chevin systems of 25 years look positively antiquated by today's standards. They were very rarely networked and could only receive limited amounts of data through a floppy disk or by hand keying.

"However, they were designed with the same objectives that we pursue today – to help customers manage their fleets in a safe, responsible, efficient and cost-effective manner.

"We have found success over the years by using the most appropriate new technology to help customers achieve their goals – and we very much expect to be here in another quarter of a century through following the same strategy."

Ashley added that the company still had a number of customers and at least one employee that became part of the Chevin story in the company's first year of existence.

He said: "One of our key strengths has always been building personal relationships with our customers and our staff. Chevin has always had the feel of being a family as well as a cutting edge technology business."
