A family transport firm celebrating its 35th anniversary this year has joined the Fortec Distribution Network in its quest to drive the business to the next level.

Terry Hicks, Managing Director of Hicks Logistics, based in Caldicot, Monmouthshire, took the decision to join a pallet network so he could enhance his service offering, effectively providing a one-stop shop to existing and prospective customers.

He chose Fortec when he realised its values and principles were very much in keeping with those of his own business and after seeing the immediate benefits Fortec would bring to customers, in terms of service and costs.

With much of its custom coming from the construction industry Hicks Logistics specialises in the transportation of specialist equipment such as cherry pickers and powered access equipment. It also operates a general haulage arm which specialises mainly in timber products but also transports a wide range of other goods for customers from various sectors.

Terry runs the company with his wife, Linda, a Director, and sons Simon, who is Transport Manager and Richard, who is fleet manager.

Originally the company was founded with one vehicle. Today it operates a 60-strong fleet out of a 25,000 sq ft site. It also employs an 80-strong workforce, serving 400 to 500 customers.

Much of its success is down to the company making a conscious effort some 10 years ago to supply tailored solutions for the construction industry. Half of the Hicks fleet is made up of low-loaders and half also bears the livery of one of its largest customers, UK Platforms. Other customers include Premier Forest Products and Sports Direct.

In preparation for its relationship with Fortec the company is investing in a 20,000 sq ft warehouse attached to its existing premises, which will offer storage facilities.

Terry Hicks said: "We are delighted to join the Fortec Distribution Network as part of our plans to expand our customer care.

"Hicks Logistics prides itself on hard work, reliability, honesty and communication, all the while offering a personal touch.

"This approach has allowed us to enjoy consistent growth, with many relationships with our customers dating back 15 or 20 years and Fortec will help us build on this in the future."

To mark 35 years in business Hicks Logistics has invested in some anniversary-liveried trucks.

Neil Hodgson, Managing Director of the Fortec Distribution Network, added: "We are delighted to welcome Hicks Logistics to Fortec. For more than three decades the company has provided a solid, reliable service to a large portfolio of customers and we look forward to enhancing that offering in the future. "
