Coop in Norway, with a turnover of over 4 billion euro's and a market share of 24%, is the second largest food retailer of this northern European country. The company plans to build a distribution centre covering all temperature zones in direct proximity of the capital Oslo. Coop Norge Handel AS sent the formal order to general contractor Witron Logistik + Informatik Gmbh during the first week of December 2010. Witron came first in a design competition, based on its innovative concept together with its long and proven experience with the successful completion of extensive projects. "The complete concept impressed us regarding its cost-efficiency, ergonomics, energy efficiency and flexibility," said Halvor Nassvik, at Coop Norge Handel AS. Like many other food retailers worldwide, Coop puts its trust in the automated Witron logistics solutions OPM, DPS, CPS and DPP.

This logistics building is about 50.000 m2 in size, and from this warehouse Coop will supply the eastern regions within Norway. The distribution centre will also cover the central warehouse function for slow-moving and special items for Coop's 850 stores situated throughout Norway. The site will hold nearly 12,500 different articles from the dry-assortment, fresh assortment (+2 degrees), as well as the frozen product assortment (- 25 degrees) and fruit and vegetable products (+7 degrees, +12 degrees).
All pallet/stacker cranes and conveyors will be built by the Witron daughter FAS - equipped with environmental friendly, power-saving and synchronous propulsion technology. The material flow in all stock areas and temperature zones is said to be of the highest logistic efficiency. "Beyond that, with the assigned technology we have the possibility to offer our customers an optimal and sustainable store-service for many years to come," said Nassvik.
In addition to its design work, Witron will supply the IT, PLC-controls and all the mechanics for the project. Technical service and operation of the logistics centre is managed by the Witron onsite Team.
