Constructed by Bowmer & Kirkland Group, one of the UKs largest privately owned construction engineering and development companies, the centre at Teesport is said to represent the largest contract ever undertaken by Tesco. Work began on the development in August 2008. The chief responsibility of the Teesport development, (selected for its outstanding transport links and sea cargo facilities) will be to help accommodate Tescos non-food hard lines.
The centre which is situated amongst the ports 700 acre complex covers an area of approximately 3m sq. ft. (66.8 acres). Bowmer & Kirkland, which offers a wide range of specialist construction services, developed a 34m tall High Bay and 60, 000 sq m lower profile Low Bay storage building amongst the facility. Anticipated to receive trade from the Far East, the Tesco centre will primarily import goods from the electrical sector. This will then allow the centre to control the distribution of goods into Tescos wider operational cycle which supplies 2,184 stores.

In addition to receiving a Tesco Values Award, for the high quality standards attained, Bowmer & Kirkland has also won a major award for the project from the Confederation of Construction Specialists annual awards, after working alongside specialist sub-contractor Easilift who nominated the group. The CCS panel judged Bowmer & Kirkland on its relationship with the sub-contractor Easilift, taking speed of payment, partnering and teamwork into consideration. The CCS encourages nominations across the UK from members where exceptional working relationships have been practiced with main contractors.
Contract Manager of the Tesco Teesport Distribution Centre, Mike Hill said: Whilst ensuring the site offered a variety of facilities for staff, the project also boasts a number of impressive features including a fuel island, vehicle maintenance and wash facility, goods yard, pod offices as well as full fit out facilities including an automated material handling facility. The project has also implemented a series of innovations such as off site highway improvements and associated drainage.
