Award-winning horizontal dynamic storage system sets space saving benchmark

The Puma is a unique horizontal dynamic storage solution designed to optimise the storage capacity of rooms with low ceiling heights. Thanks to its unique design it can provide the equivalent of up to 274 square metres of conventional storage in one unit for room heights of up to four metres.

A past winner of the British Materials Handling Federations Innovation Award as a prototype, the Puma comprises hundreds of individual storage cases that move relative to each other within the compact confines of the unit. Analogous to a 3D version of a sliding-tile puzzle, the Puma uses a clever algorithm to migrate cases through the shortest possible path to the operator. And, while the operator is picking from one case, the machine works in the background locating and moving the next case ready for the next picking operation. This goods-to-man' principle minimises picking time and boosts productivity.

Compared to conventional racking systems, the Kardex Puma increases productivity and cuts costs by reducing the floor space required to store articles. By housing all stock in one compact unit, greater control is available and stock accuracies of over 99 percent can be achieved. Safety and security are also enhanced by the L-shaped safety light curtain, which monitors the operators station when the lifting door is open. It also offers the added benefit of seamless integration into many workflow management systems such as ERP, MRP and MRPII. As well as offering full integration into higher level control systems, it can provide all the necessary feedback relating to stock levels and stock turnover ensuring greater yield for the customer.

To match the exact needs of the storage application, the Puma is available in a number of variants. It offers 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 storage rows across 6, 8 or 10 storage levels and a maximum total loading capacity of 25,500kg. Each of the storage cases within the Puma system can be subdivided in many ways to hold a variety of articles, with each case holding up to 250kg. With one access point for the operator, at the ergonomically correct access height, bending, stretching and lifting is virtually eliminated, reducing the effort required to place articles in storage and retrieve them.

Every Puma customer also benefits from the Kardex materials handling consultancy service which evaluates customer needs and provides a turnkey solution that meets the requirements. The service offers the option of remote diagnosis by Kardex and provides customer support through its nationwide network of service and support engineers.
