Nissan has put the emphasis on safety, productivity and the environment with the launch of a new series of ultra low emission lift trucks.

The new DX ECO-X engine range is available in six models from 1.5 to 3.2 tonne lift capacity in both diesel and LPG. Lift heights are to seven meters.

New engines designed and built by Nissan exclusively for its own lift trucks are at the heart of the new DX ECO-X models, so-called because of their low environmental impact.

Emissions from the diesel versions are almost imperceptible, while a new three-way catalytic converter reduces up to 99 per cent of harmful emissions from LPG models. Computerized engine management systems also guarantee that only the minimum quantity of fuel is consumed whatever the operation.

Operator?s well-being

For greatest operator comfort, a unique Floating Cabin reduces vibration in the cab to the minimum. The entire platform incorporates the latest ergonomics and technology and is mounted on a unique four-point, patented shock absorption system to minimize road shock and engine vibration. The operator?s compartment has also been given a decidedly comfortable automotive feel, with all components enclosed.

Electronic fingertip controls in combination with the electric forward/reverse lever are both located on the armrest to make material handling operations easy, fast and comfortable.

Auto-tilt leveling is available with the new range, to ensure pinpoint accuracy for positioning the load, quite literally at the touch of a button.

Steering is power assisted, with a small diameter steering wheel for less effort from lock-to-lock and consequently less operator fatigue. The wheel, which incorporates a large horn and self-cancelling indicator, provides ample adjustment fore and aft - including a memory function - and for height.

For extended comfort, the new DX ECO-X is available with a clear-vision, factory installed cab. Wide, tinted glass doors and a unique, curved, panoramic windscreen reduce glare and give unparalleled all-round visibility.

Safety all the time

Nissan has applied its Risk Reduction System to the series to ensure maximum operator safety. Here, features include its maintenance-free Cushioned Stability Control to provide exceptional lateral stability for the truck and load. Unlike other systems, it cannot be turned off or over-ridden.

Other safety features within the Risk Reduction System include a Mast Lock System to prevent accidental operation. It isolates the mast and fork controls immediately the operator leaves the seat. An automatic Return-to-Neutral feature also returns the truck?s transmission to neutral within three seconds of the operator leaving the seat with the truck in gear.

When the ignition key is turned, a warning on the LCD display confirms that the truck is in neutral. If the DX ECO-X has been left in gear, the engine will not start.

An optional control is also available to restrict vehicle speed according to operator skill level or operational requirements.

Further safety features include a wide, open, step with non-slip surface together with grab handle to allow easy access to the operator?s workplace in all weathers. The floor is also covered with an anti-skid mat.

Productivity on the up

With all of the control levers for direction, lift and attachments located on the right hand side, the operator of the new Nissan can keep his left hand on the wheel at all times. A single fingertip lever controls lift and tilt functions simultaneously, saving time and reducing operator fatigue.

Nissan engines and high capacity hydraulic pumps put the DX ECO-X among the fastest and most productive in its class, with travel speeds for working on long stretches are up to 19 kilometers per hour, while lift speeds are as much as 700 millimeters per second.

The series has a particularly low centre of gravity for greater stability with heavy loads or for working on rough terrain.

Nissan?s extensive range of mast options is fully applicable to the DX ECO-X and includes the unique three-stage ?Optiview? mast. Here, Nissan have moved the two full free lift cylinders to the side, leaving nothing in the centre to block the operator?s visibility.

The DX ECO-X?s steering axle has been developed in cast steel, for maximum strength, while its durable, aluminum radiator is produced with wide fin spacing to give the best heat dissipation. Here, the objective is to provide a truck able to operate under high temperature conditions when required and with an even longer life.

A metal plate on the underside of the truck both protects from debris and minimizes the downdraught which causes to dust at ground level to swirl into the air.

For complete access to the engine compartment, a unique mechanism first lifts the hood and then rotates it backwards. For additional safety, the hood is also fitted with a micro-switch which cuts the engine as soon as it is opened.

Economics for a lifetime

Nissan has designed the new DX ECO-X series for maximum uptime and fuel efficiency and for minimum maintenance expense. As an example, LPG models feature an ECO-switch that allows the operator to set the truck for either standard performance or for even greater fuel savings ? up to 18 per cent ? and even lower noise levels.

Service technicians are able to make fast diagnosis with the on-board Built-In-Test-Equipment (BITE). The system performs self-checks continuously and allows for easy troubleshooting. In the event of a malfunction, a coded warning will appear on the LCD display.

Engine and vehicle functions are monitored and controlled continually through a newly developed Engine Concentrated Control System designed for the LPG models to offer rapid troubleshooting and to deliver the best truck performance at all times and under all conditions. A special Powertrain Protection System has also been incorporated on LPG models to provide even longer engine life.

When activated, a reminder indication is shown in the LCD at startup whenever a specified operating hour or day and date has been reached, reminding of the need for regular service.

The standard 4-digit PIN access system avoids unauthorized truck usage. Up to five PIN-codes can be registered. It allows readout of operating hours for each code or operator.

With its all new ultra low emission engines and management systems, and the application of its risk reduction system, Nissan has set completely new operational standards with the DX ECO-X - from operator safety and comfort through to maximum productivity and minimum environmental impact.
