New heavyweight diesels from Mitsubishi

A new 8 to 16 tonne diesel counterbalance series, described by its maker as a tough truck with a gentle touch, has been launched by Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks. The aim of the FD80-160N series is to deliver extreme power and ruggedness but at the same time to make driving a pleasure and to minimise environmental impact.

Common rail technology has been used in combination with an electronically controlled fuel injection system, a turbo charger, an intercooler, exhaust gas recirculation and a positive crank case ventilation system to control torque, noise and emissions. As a result, all trucks in the seven-model series comply with stage lllA of the latest exhaust emissions regulations (97/68/EC updated to 2004/26/EC), and the drivers enjoy low noise levels at ear height.

Other ergonomic and comfort features include a full-suspension seat, carefully angled automotive-style pedals and a precise, low-effort steering system. The trucks fingertip hydraulic controls are integrated into a fully adjustable, comfortable armrest.

The Mitsubishi Integrated Presence System (IPS) providing a parking brake alarm, a seat belt warning light and a hydraulic and travel interlock system gives extra peace of mind. Heavy-duty, oil-cooled disc brakes are fitted as standard on the 16 tonne model and as an option on the others. Models of 8, 9, 10, 12, 13.5 and 15 tonne capacity are equipped with air-assisted, hydraulically actuated, high-performance drum brakes.

At the heart of every truck in this series is the powerful Mitsubishi 6M60-TL diesel engine which, according to the figures, produces high output and torque for maximum productivity. A heavy-duty auto-shift transmission, operating through clutches with a large friction area, ensures trouble-free operation and precise inching.

To make the trucks tough enough to survive in the harshest applications, heavy-duty components and protective features have been used wherever necessary. The high-strength masts, the robust rear axle, the efficient aluminium radiator and the high-performance hydraulic breather are just a few examples.

A box-shaped structure, with fuel and hydraulic tanks integrated into it, adds to the rigidity of the chassis. The aim is that the driver will feel a strong sense of confidence, surrounded by the rigid chassis and overhead guard but with clear views in all directions.

While every effort has been made to keep maintenance needs to a minimum, all forklift trucks must be subject to regular checks and servicing. For most purposes, including all daily checks, rapid access features allow quick and easy reach to all areas of the new trucks without the need for tools. For maximum access, the standard operator compartment is tiltable.

The standard specification of the FD80-160N series is very high, but a range of optional features is also available. These include various mast attachments, air intake options and a deluxe cabin.
