The International Materials Handling Exhibition (IMHX), taking place from 19 to 22 March 2013 at the NEC, Birmingham, is a leading UK intralogistics event. The exhibition's size already exceeds that of the previous show in 2010, so the event promises to be the best yet. With some 400 exhibitors showcasing their latest products and free seminars on a range of hot topics, IMHX 2013 is a must-attend event for all logistics professionals.

IMHX offers a wealth of information, innovation and networking opportunities for executives in the distribution, freight and 3PL services sector. Explains Rob Fisher, IMHX Event Director, "Visitors from a wide range of industries – from automotive to healthcare – find IMHX to be a great source of new ideas, but managers and directors in the distribution, freight and third-party logistics sector probably have the most to gain from a visit. Our exhibitors know that executives from the leading companies in this field attend the show and they have products and services on offer that help to maximise efficiency for operators of distribution networks."

Among products on show from the leading manufacturer of storage and order picking systems, BITO, will be its innovative SL86 heavy-duty plastic container, which recently won a prestigious Red Dot Product Design Award. An alternative to large-volume containers made from metal or wood, the SL86 is light yet sturdy and its dimensions – 80 x 60 cm, with a choice of two different heights – meet the demands of today's trend towards reduced batch sizes. With a load capacity of 500 kg and a stacking load of 1,500 kg, the container has far-reaching potential in distribution networks across a range of industries. Headquartered in Germany, BITO will be demonstrating its range of shelving, racking, storage and order picking bins and containers, warehouse equipment and accessories on stand 19H125.

SSI Schaefer, a leading supplier in the field of planning and implementation of integrated logistics systems, recently designed and built the steel support structure for the new clad-rack warehouse of logistics service provider, Partner Logistics, in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. An expert in operating highly automated warehouses, Netherlands-based Partner Logistics provides warehousing services to leading companies in the food, retail and consumer goods sectors in the Netherlands, Belgium, UK and Russia. Like many of Partner Logistics' sites, the Wisbech warehouse stores and distributes frozen food, although the company also operates ambient and chilled facilities. The structure built by SSI Schaefer (stand 18N100) at Wisbech is over 30 metres high, 144 metres long and 89 metres wide, with a storage capacity of up to 91,200 pallets. By supporting the roof and walls, clad-rack structures offer short construction times – the speed of the build can be up to 30% faster – and attractive depreciation possibilities, as well as significant space savings.

Energy-efficient lighting solutions supplier, Ecotronic, recently retro-fitted new lighting for Gosport-based third-party logistics provider, CPG Logistics. The 3PL firm manages complex supply chains for clients across a variety of industry sectors including pharmaceutical, defence, hi-tech and cosmetics. Ecotronic (stand 17R85) supplied the racking aisles and nine mezzanine floors of CPG Logistics' warehouse with its EcoBAY® T5 fluorescent Hi-BAY fittings and EcoPAK® T5 fluorescent batten fittings. The new solution has resulted in an energy saving of 80% for lighting and an overall reduction of 40%, which equates to an annual electricity saving of over £45,000. CPG Logistics qualified for the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme – a government-funded programme providing businesses with enhanced tax relief for investments in equipment that meets energy-saving criteria – and the Carbon Trust loan scheme was also used to fund the project. The lighting solution also reduced CO2 emissions by 254 tonnes per year.

TVH, a leader in replacement parts for material handling and industrial vehicles, has launched a brand-new parts webshop. Branded ‘MyTotalSource', the e-commerce site is compatible with Android, Mac, iPad and Windows PCs, enabling users to browse parts, send enquiries and place orders 24/7. Users can immediately get information on price and delivery times of required parts, with photographs being automatically sent to enquirers. TVH takes pride in supplying an enormous range of parts from tiny nuts to complete chassis for vehicles ranging from simple hand trolleys to the heaviest lift trucks, regardless of brand or year of construction. The company, headquartered in Belgium, will be promoting its new webshop on stand 20F35 at IMHX 2013.

Transdek, the lifting and loading bay equipment specialist, will be promoting its range of products at IMHX 2013, including a new solution designed to improve the distribution of chilled and frozen products. This innovative system facilitates fast and efficient loading of temperature-controlled products through the use of an insulated ramp, which allows forklift trucks direct access to a dock leveller pod. Transdek will be running regular demonstrations of its loading bay products on stand 20D21 throughout the show.

AEB, the supply chain management IT solutions provider, has published a series of white papers on freight cost control. Available for download from the company's website, the documents give advice for logistics managers on a number of topics such as how to reduce transport costs, maximise operational efficiency, raise service levels, catch freight invoice discrepancies, compare complex carrier tariffs, negotiate forwarder tariffs, build long-term partnerships and assign costs to applicable cost centres without wasting resources. AEB will be promoting its range of control solutions for global supply chains on stand 18P65 at IMHX.
