ByBox, the UK's in-night distribution specialist, which has its central hub situated in Coventry, has been named as a Merit winner at the British Safety Council's 2012 International Safety Awards. The accolade was given in recognition of the company's continued commitment towards improving health and safety standards across the business. To achieve Merit status ByBox had to meet an exacting set of criteria which included the completion of a rigorous twelve point questionnaire for which ByBox received a score of 52 out of a maximum of 60.

Experts looked at the company's accident records in addition to the various health and safety management systems it has in place ranging from hazard and risk assessment, effectiveness of health and safety control measures and fire safety arrangements. They also looked at how health and safety procedures are proactively monitored and how the health and well-being of the workforce and vulnerable personnel is ensured. Additionally, the criteria required ByBox to identify its priority areas over the next twelve months and to show how it intended to involve the workforce in implementing these processes. It is only the second time ByBox has entered the awards and in just twelve months it has improved its scoring from achieving a 'Pass' in 2011 to achieving ''Merit' status this year.

Roger Ward, Safety, Health, Environmental & Facilities Manager at ByBox, said, "We are proud to have achieved Merit status in this year's awards. It is a tremendous achievement and is testimony to the contribution which everyone makes to health and safety not just at the Coventry Hub but across the network as a whole. Health and safety among our employees is always at the forefront of our minds here at ByBox and good practice forms an integral part of the work ethic we aim to instill in each and every one of our employees so it becomes second nature in their everyday work. Not ones to rest on our laurels, our aim is now to achieve a Distinction in 2013."

ByBox' commitment to health and safety is further demonstrated by the fact that in addition to being a member of the British Safety Council, it also holds the Environmental Management System Accreditation BS8555, the Quality Management System ISO90001:2008 and the Health & Safety Management System Accreditation OHSAS18001.

Alex Botha, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, said, "What the winners have demonstrated in these awards is that well-managed health and safety ensures the safety and wellbeing of their employees and contributes to business effectiveness and success. The health and safety of employees is non-negotiable and the winners have shown their determination, like us, to ensure that no one is killed, injured or made ill by work activities. The British Safety Council is proud to congratulate all of the winners on their success and effectiveness in keeping their employees healthy and safe."
