Truck toll on numerous four-lane trunk roads is going to be introduced in Germany by the middle of this year. This also means additional costs that logistics companies cannot easily estimate at present. But it does not stop there. A new truck toll system will be introduced in Poland as well.

The Czech Republic also plans to significantly increase its road toll by the end of this year and, in 2012, an eco-tax will be imposed on heavy goods vehicles using the national roads in Alsace. It is planned to introduce this measure nationwide in 2013. Therefore, map&guide now provides a next-generation toll calculation that can model and calculate scenarios, including future changes.

The transport route planner map&guide professional is a pioneering solution in the field of road toll calculation in Germany. It can calculate road toll for freight transport throughout Europe. However, so far the system has only been able to calculate the new road charges on the basis of the data provided by the toll operators. This means that users have had to wait up to a month before they have been able calculate their costs including the current road toll. A delay that not only had a negative impact on financial issues, considering the fact that logistics service providers must calculate the costs for their quotes and general agreements several months in advance.

The new map&guide professional version can manage several toll scenarios and thus react to updated toll charges and new systems within a couple of days. To this end, the software uses toll scenarios that PTV's transportation experts generate every two weeks for the whole of Europe.

Users can now benefit from considerable added value: the system enables them to plan several months ahead and calculate future costs including updated fees, additional toll routes or new systems, like the one in Poland. This helps them to quickly submit realistic quotes and to calculate their transport costs accurately.

How PTV predicts the future
The challenge regarding future toll costs is the fact that the exact rates are not yet known. Sometimes the same is true for the date of toll introduction, as is the case for Germany's federal roads. PTV's transportation experts benefit from their extensive expertise in this field as they have been involved in transport committees and numerous international projects for many years. A separate department has been established which is concerned with the collection of data and information that is evaluated by a committee on a weekly basis. This data is then used to create transparent scenarios allowing the user to check the rates, sources and a detailed description of each scenario.

How to calculate mass data
The add-on module Calc+ assists users in transferring trip and route data for a whole time period (e.g. on a monthly or quarterly basis) from Microsoft Excel to map&guide for calculation purposes. And now it is even possible to calculate the impact of increased toll on their entire vehicle fleet. With the new version logistics service providers can now for example estimate the total costs for the new truck toll imposed in Poland or on France's national road network based on all transport runs within a specific period of time. The earlier they know the new cost pool, the earlier they can include it in their transport rates. And everything is updated at once.
