The UK's largest co-packer invested in new food grade stainless steel tables, and additional labeling and gluing equipment at its Milton Keynes facility to complete the five-item Christmas project. DHL managed the entire logistics process from packaging assembly to dispatch. Each product was quality checked, placed into an acetate tray, and the box then sealed with food grade glue ready for transportation in cases of 18.
Pallets of transit cases were labeled with key product information and the finished selection boxes were delivered back to Thorntons' distribution centres in DHL Consumer vehicles. DHL packed the Thorntons Christmas Selection Boxes with a milk chocolate Santa Claus lollipop, a milk chocolate Reindeer lollipop, a bag of mini vanilla Fudge Cubes, a bag of milk chocolate buttons and a bag of milk chocolate covered raisins.
Lynn Grady, General Manager of DHL's Consumer Sector's Co-Pack operations, said: "It was fantastic to be a part of such a fun festive project for such a well loved chocolate brand, and it demonstrates our unrivalled co-packing skills and ability to cope with handling large volumes of product during seasonal campaigns. At DHL we are able to offer customers a variety of co-packing services in different combination packages. This provided Thorntons with the choice and flexibility required to fulfill the requirements of its Christmas campaign. In addition our ability to work to short lead times meant we could accommodate a four-week packing window and have the boxes finished in plenty of time for the holiday season. We are really proud to have assembled these for Thorntons as they are another great looking high quality product, which is bound to fly off the shelves."
Allan Edmondson, Senior Buyer at Thorntons, said: "DHL Supply Chain has proved it understands the needs of our in-store promotions. Its handling of the selection boxes released management time at Thorntons, which is crucial for us at this time of year. The standard of the DHL warehouse exceeded our expectations and its investment in new equipment illustrates its commitment to customers and its co-pack success. Working with DHL as a co-packing partner provided us with invaluable support and advice throughout all stages of the packing process, and they did a fantastic job in a short timeframe."
