Vehicle lift specialist Stertil Koni, in partnership with its Distributor CCS, has installed two heavy-duty lifts into the revamped workshop of Poole Borough Council. The 25-tonne lifts simplify repairs and maintenance of the council's 260-strong fleet of vehicles.

The Council wanted to update its workshop by installing lifts with a greater capacity to accommodate its new vehicles. Previously, there were problems loading vehicles onto the 34-year-old ramp in the existing workshop, which was also laid out poorly. Due to space issues, the Council wanted to fit scissor-type lifts, recessed in the ground. However, the recessed lifts raised concerns over health and safety because of the risks associated with the open pit beneath the raised lifts. Stertil Koni solved the problem by recommending its new automatic recess cover plates, which improve safety in the workshop by removing the danger of an open pit.

In total, Stertil Koni installed two SKY 250 column-free platform lifts plus recess cover plates, two 16-tonne jacking beams and two lighting kits. The Council uses the lifts for the planning of servicing and inspection of its fleet of 260 vehicles, which includes 32-tonne rigid hook loaders as well as 26-tonne refuse vehicles. The jacking beams work in conjunction with the lifts, allowing wheels and tyres to be safely removed and fitted.

"The flush floor lifts have made such a difference," says Mark Parsons of Poole Borough Council. "We have increased throughput and the inspection process is quicker. There is also more room to park vehicles within the workshop."

Stertil Koni's SKY 250 lift is the ultimate heavy-duty lift in terms of efficiency, versatility and safety. Ideal for large vehicles such as tractor units or articulated bendibuses, users may select platform lengths from seven to 14.5 metres. Even the 14.5 metre version only needs a lifting leg at each end of the platform and the lift itself needs only a narrow bay width, helping to optimise usable workshop space. The lifting height of 1.75 metres, reached in just 89 seconds, provides clear and uncluttered access to the underside of vehicles from all sides.

In common with all Stertil Koni products, safety is paramount and the SKY lift has an independent mechanical locking system which is always active. Each leg also has an individual measuring device, ensuring smooth and level synchronisation to within 15mm.

"The SKY lift has been cleverly designed to incorporate a host of world-beating features and benefits - no crossbeams or base frame, complete accessibility from all sides, locking from floor level and vertical lifting," says Tony Edge of Stertil Koni. "This lift has transformed many workshops it really is the ultimate heavy-duty lift."

"I'm delighted to say that Stertil's installation lived up to our expectations," adds Mark Parsons. "The whole project was handled exceptionally well from start to finish and we are extremely pleased with the result."
