Inchcape Fleet Solutions beats the big freeze with emergency staff 4x4 shuttle fleet

Inchcape Fleet Solutions has pulled out all the stops to beat the big freeze including assembling its own fleet of 4x4 vehicles to provide a shuttle service to ensure all 170 staff can safely get to work and home again.

With freezing temperatures and up to 12 inches of snow falling in Hampshire in recent days and the forecast for next week little different, Portsmouth-based Inchcape Fleet Solutions will run its swiftly assembled shuttle fleet until the Arctic-like weather eases.

A skeleton team of Inchcape Fleet Solutions employees led by Customer Services Director David Graham, and HR Director Kerry Howard beat the freeze on Wednesday (January 6) as the companys emergency business continuity plan swung into action.

Overnight the company started to assemble its emergency vehicle fleet that enabled more than 50 employees to get into Inchcape Fleet Solutions headquarters yesterday (Thursday).

By today (Friday) the fleet - 10 4x4s and minibuses obtained from the leasing and fleet management specialists retail and rental partners - was being used to ferry staff to and from work across a 30-mile radius of Hampshire.

Mr Graham, who spent nights in a nearby hotel after finding it impossible to make the journey home along the M27 and A3, said: The safety of our employees is paramount, but it is also vital that we continue to supply a comprehensive service to all of our customers. The initiatives we have taken have generated very positive feedback from customers.

Initially we re-routed telephone lines to an emergency control desk, but the shuttle fleet has enabled all of our staff to report for work. About 100 employees are using the shuttle service with the remainder able to make their own way to and from work. As a result its business as usual.

Managing director Terry Bartlett, Customer Services Director David Graham, HR Director Kerry Howard supported by many staff volunteered to drive the 4x4 shuttle fleet. Mr Bartlett said: Despite the adverse weather we will continue to do our best to offer a normal service to customers.

Employees have displayed a true Dunkirk spirit in wanting to get to work. The efforts made really do show what makes Inchcape Fleet Solutions a very special and unique business.

Inchcape Fleet Solutions has also issued daily electronic communications to all customers detailing weather information, best practice driving advice in the conditions and the support available in the event of a vehicle breakdown or any other emergency.
