The latest GPS tracking systems can alert drivers when they have entered an area surrounded by a virtual geo fence, according to leading GPS tracking and vehicle telematics company VeriLocation.

And it says the estimated 6 million in fines collected by Transport For London every year could be wiped out using this automatic alert.

You get a penalty notice for 120 if you havent paid the congestion charge by midnight the day after you entered the charge zone, said VeriLocations Andrew Overton.

For some drivers thats a shock as they didnt realise they had been in the zone, despite the signage. If you are tracking the location of your vehicle, you can get an alert when you enter the congestion charge zone.

VeriLocations VL-Fleet vehicle tracking system gives fleet managers valuable real time information and powerful analytical reports on vehicle movements.

The information is accessed through a normal internet browser on any computer.

Alerts can be set up for vehicles entering the congestion charge zone.

Any other geo fence can be set up; for example alerting the business when a vehicle is re-entering the premises, or when it has reached a key client.

Andrew added: There are so many clever things you can do with GPS data now. But surely the smartest is to keep more money in your pocket by avoiding pointless fines.

VeriLocation has been in GPS tracking and mapping since 1995, and now tracks more than 10,000 devices and vehicles in the UK.
