As part of a significant overhaul of its entire trailer fleet, Kelly International - the Kent-based haulier - has taken delivery of seven S.CS Mega curtainsider trailers from Schmitz Cargobull. The trailers will be used to transport large rolls of paper between the UK and mainland Europe on behalf of several leading paper manufacturers.

The trailers are fitted with a skate and track system from Joloda that has been specifically developed for the paper industry. In simple terms, the floor mounted system enables heavy reels of paper to be loaded and unloaded and manouvred within the trailer easily and efficiently.

According to Kelly Internationals Martin Kelly, Schmitz Cargobull was the only trailer manufacturer capable of fitting the Joloda system without compromising the internal height of the trailer and this was a significant influence on the companys purchase decision.

The Schmitz Cargobull curtainsided MEGA trailers supplied to Kelly International are able to meet Kellys capacity requirements without exceeding the European height rules, thanks to Schmitz Cargobulls VARIOS Top-Technology. VARIOS Top-Technology enables the trailers overall height to be adjusted allowing them to run on British and mainland European roads.

VARIOS incorporates a simple plug-in mechanism that allows the overall trailer height to be changed with the minimum of fuss. The trailer body can be lifted and lowered as required to run on a low ride tractor and can also be used with standard height tractor units.

There is a trend among paper manufacturers to produce ever larger reels which means the products that we handle are getting taller all the time, says Martin Kelly.  This means that we need trailers that offer high internal dimensions but as they will be operating on routes to Europe, we also require a product that does not exceed the 4 metre European height restriction.

The new trailers were built at Schmitz Cargobulls UK production facility at Harelaw, County Durham and are constructed using Schmitz Cargobulls patented bolted and galvanized production method. Essentially, the bolted and galvanized system removes the need for any welding and, therefore, results in consistently high product quality and greater production flexibility. The galvanizing process all parts of the chassis are galvanized before the build process takes place ensures that there is no corrosion within the joint when two parts of the trailer are brought together. Schmitz Cargobull offers a 10 year anti-corrosion warranty on the Galvanized chassis as standard.

The acquisition of the new fleet was financed through Cargobull Finance a joint venture between Schmitz Cargobull De Lage Landen. We had a number of finance options open to us but the Cargobull Finance package was the most competitive, adds Martin Kelly.
