Energy and cost saving lighting control now available for warehouses

Operators of high-ceilinged distribution and storage facilities can now take advantage of energy and cost-saving lighting control from Ex-Or, the Honeywell- owned lighting management specialist.

Ex-Or is launching its HighBay LightSpot, a presence detection system specially designed to eliminate unnecessary use of lighting in buildings with ceiling heights of between 8 and 14 metres. The development of HighBay means that Ex-Or now offers the UK's widest range of energy and cost-saving lighting controls and managed lighting systems for all types of commercial buildings.

Depending on the specific usage patterns in a storage facility, lighting energy cost savings of as much as 80 per cent can be achieved as a result of the installation of the Ex-Or HighBay LightSpot.  Payback - the period of time it takes for the system to pay for itself thanks to the resulting energy cost savings - would, in this instance, be less than a year - with the Ex-Or system continuing to deliver energy cost savings over the life of the building.

Distribution hubs and storage facilities are increasing in height to enable operators to maximise the value of the land footprint occupied by the building. However, higher ceilings have led to higher energy costs - in particular, large internal areas remain lit despite being unoccupied for much of the time.

Like all LightSpot systems, HighBay employs presence detection technology which enables the lighting to respond to any movement that occurs, however small, when the monitored area is occupied. Anyone entering the monitored area automatically activates the lighting and subsequently sustains it by the movements they make as they go about their normal working activity. When the area is vacated, the lights automatically switch off or, if preferred, are set-back to a minimum output. In large storage and warehousing facilities, discharge lighting - which is incapable of being controlled or dimmed effectively - is giving way to fluorescent lighting which is ideal for linking with presence detection lighting control.

Ex-Or's long established Long Range series of LightSpot offers detection with ranges of up to 60 metres. However in many warehouse and storage applications, especially where there are a large number of racking aisles, more precise lighting control is needed. The HighBay detectors have been specially designed to provide a narrow angle of view despite the fact they are mounted at great height. This means that much smaller and more precisely targeted internal areas can be monitored by HighBay, so that lighting can be delivered where it is needed with much greater precision.

Ex-Or HighBay is available in surface and flush mount configurations, or can be integrated into most types of luminaires. The integrated versions offer significant installation and commissioning cost savings.
