At an international press day just before Xmas at their production plant in Genlis, France, Savoye offered a preview of two new exiting advanced automated storage systems the PTS Picking Tray System and the MAGMATIC modulo.on the technology highlights of 2008.

The Picking Tray System (PTS) is a high-performance automated storage/retrieval system which reduces travel time for pickers from around 7/8 km per day to zero offering a picking rate of up to 800 lines per hour with an estimated payback of 2.5 to 3.5 years versus semi automated systems.  For the fist time in an AS/RS system the shuttles are powered by eco-friendly supercapacitors which use less energy than batteries or cables and dont emit fumes.  A PTS aisle is generally served by one to three shuttles each carrying enough energy for one return load and automatically recharges in seconds during which time the others keep working ensuring the process is continuous. The main applications are for order picking systems or sub-systems, shipping buffers for orders as well as provisional storage for returned products.  Twice as compact as a conventional picking area PTS Picking Tray System is a modular and easy-to-integrate solution that has been designed with the objective of providing a flexible and cost-efficient application for both new and existing sites:

Other features include:
-  not necessary to unpack goods single units, cases and totes are all stored on trays;
- modular performance in each aisle due to autonomous vehicles;
- stock is removed in the same sequence as the incoming orders from the WMS

Since its introduction in 1994 some 35 MAGMATIC automated pallet stores have been installed across Europe ranging in size from 1400 to 112000 pallets

Aimed specifically at small to medium sized warehouse with capacities of 3000 to 12000 pallets the MAGMATIC modulo is a further development of the proven MAGMATIC technology achieving throughputs of 30 and 60 combined cycles per hour. It takes up less space than a manual system and with a filling rate of 98% the modular system can help double the number of pallets stored per square metre.

The MAGMATIC modulo is a compact modular system which uses a stacker crane instead of the traditional Levmatic elevators, racking x-ways, radio guidance and batteries/battery loaders used for previous versions. It is suitable for pallet sizes between 800mm x 1200mm and 1000mm x 1200mm weighing up to 1200kg stored to a height of between 5m and 25m.

The MAGMATIC can be adapted to suit various building shapes making it particularly suitable for existing premises.  Serving different levels and sides of a building, with few conveyors, it is a very flexible alternative to fork lift and narrow aisle trucks with the added bonus of reduced labour costs.

Both products can be seen live at the Manutention 2008 in Paris, March 11th to 14th (Hall 6, Stand C001) and at the CeMAT 2008 in Hanover, May 27th to 31st 2008 (Hall 27, Stand C16).
